Iceland or Bust

I've been home for a few days now and I've finally gotten over my jet lag. Which means I have to tell you all about Iceland- what to see- what to do- where to eat. So here it goes...

First things first. Everyone told me beware of the food. Puffin, Fermented Shark, and Whale will flood the menus. This is false. I had an amazing culinary experience throughout Iceland and never saw puffin on the menu. Some favorites/Best in Show !

Best in Brunch: Bergsson Mathús

Best in Coffee: Joe and Juice. This place never gets old. It's in the airport- and all over Europe. But the smooties, coffee and sandwiches. (Shout out to the Avocado one. I love you.)

Best Hot Dog: Baejarins Neztu Pylsur (Short walk from downtown)

Best Restaurant in Vik (South): Sedur. This place is near the black sand beach and a must for seafood. Recommend: Grilled Chard.

Best Steak: No surprise... 'Steikhusio' cute restaurant near the harbor. http://steik.is/vefur/

Best View in Reykjavik: Hallgrimskirkja church. (Inexpensive and the cutest view of all the colorful houses in town)

Best Activity: Its a toss up for me between riding the Icelandic ponies, driving around the Golden Circle- hello beautiful waterfalls! and Silfra snorkeling. But it has to be the snorkeling adventure. We went with 'Dive Iceland' They were an amazing tour group with professional guides, dry suits to keep you warm and some hot chocolate and cookies when you got out. You snorkel through the tectonic plates and its breathtaking and a must do if you visit!

Best Jet Lag Cure: Blue Lagoon. A swim up bar- face mask and huge hot tub. (essentially) Yes and Yes.

Only Cons:

1- Everything smells like sulfur. Especially if you op to stay in an airbnb. The water takes some getting used to.

2- If you visit in May/ summer months its pretty much light out all day. So bring a sleeping mask.

3-Don't spend more than 2 full days in Reykjavík. Small city. Not a ton to see besides the church, city streets, Perlan and some small museums. I will say the food was a great bonus though.

4- Lastly- Iceland is an expensive place to visit. So just be prepared.

xo,

kih
